Letter from the Principal

Thank you for your interest in the University of Edinburgh, I am delighted to share these exciting opportunities to join our institution.

The University of Edinburgh is a thriving community of students, staff and supporters situated in one of the world’s most beautiful cities.  With our record of delivering world leading impactful research, driving forward data driven innovation through the City Region Deal, impressive collaboration with partners across the globe and the ability to attract staff and students from 160 countries we are as relevant today as when we were established in 1583.  A world leading institution with over 400 years of excellence behind us and an approach to our future which is both ambitious and confident.

As several colleagues approach the end of their terms of office, we have a number of opportunities to join the leadership team at the top of one of the world’s leading universities.  The new appointments will freshen and strengthen the University’s leadership as we continue our commitment to deliver on the vision and ambitions set out in our Strategy 2030 which focusses on our values, on the civic purpose for which we were founded, and the changes we want to deliver for the University and for society. One of the new roles represents an evolution in our leadership approach as we move to appoint a Provost.  Reporting directly to me, the Provost will lead all of the academic staff in teaching and research across the University; a particularly vital role for the University’s future.

These roles all contribute to the broader strategic leadership of the institution, and although varied in their focus we are seeking to discover and appoint collaborative, engaging and visionary leaders who share in our values and commitment to higher education. As the positions each have their own remits and responsibilities, I understand that more than one opportunity might appeal and of course, please do feel able to apply to multiple positions, an interest in one should not preclude interest in another.

All of the new members of the senior team will be essential to drive and shape the University’s future direction and will be capable of inspiring colleagues as well as leading and delivering significant change.

Thank you again for considering the University of Edinburgh. It is an exciting time to join and lead this brilliant institution and to address tomorrow’s greatest challenges through our values-led approach.

Best regards,

Professor Peter Mathieson
Principal and Vice-Chancellor
